Title Cocke-Spur view 16 from scrapbook
Dates of Creation May 4, 1914
Scope & Content Photograph of the Cocke family and their honored guests in front of the pergola at "Cocke-Spur", the Orchard Hill residence of Mr. Lucian Hayward Cocke and Sarah (Johnson) Hagan Cocke, his wife, just prior to the May 4, 1914 reception for Vice President and Mrs.Thomas R. Marshall. Seated from left to right in the first row are: Mattie Cocke, sister of Lucian Cocke, Lois Marshall, wife of Vice President Thomas Marshall, Araminta Kern, wife of Senator John Kern, and Charles Francis Cocke, son of Lucian Cocke. Standing from left to right in the second row are: Col. Alfred B. Williams, Mary Stuart (Cocke) Goodwin, daughter of Lucian Cocke, Harry St. George Tucker, Miss Frances Mingea (fiancee of Charles Francis Cocke), Lucian Hayward Cocke, Vice President Thomas R. Marshall, and Sarah (Johnson) Hagan Cocke. Lucian Hayward Cocke and Mattie Cocke were two of the children of Dr, Charles Lewis Cocke, founder and former President of Hollins Institute, later Hollins College, and now Hollins University. Senator John Kern was not present for this occasion as he had been called back to Washington, D.C. on urgent business.This photograph appears on page 18 of a scrapbook titled "Cocke-Spur" formerly owned by Sarah (Johnson) Hagan Cocke.
