Jackson Memorial Hall at VMI |
Description |
Virginia Military Institute (VMI) is the oldest state-supported military college and one of six senior military colleges in the United States. It was established in 1839 on the site of the Lexington, Virginia state arsenal. All VMI students are military cadets, unlike other state military colleges in the United States. VMI offers degrees in 14 disciplines in the fields of engineering, science and liberal arts. VMI has been called the "West Point of the South", and unlike federal service academies, all VMI cadets must participate in the Reserve Officer's Training Corps (ROTC) and are not required to serve in the military upon graduation. However, they may accept a commission in any U. S. military branch or pursue civilian careers upon graduation. In 1997 VMI was the last U.S. military college to admit women. Jackson Memorial Hall is the assembly hall and the Institute's museum. The hall was named after General Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson and houses a collection of his memorabilia. Jackson became an instructor at VMI in 1851 in artillery tactics and cadet training. |
