Letter headed "Grove Hill, Decr. 21st 1853" from Emma Walker Gilmer Breckinridge to "my dear son" Cary Breckinridge, Jr. at Chatham, Pittsylvania [County Virginia] responding to his latest letter telling him he is the best of her sons to write letters, so she will promptly answer his most recent letter, tells of "having a partridge net made" [for quail or pheasants] and hopes several of the men can come during the Christmas holidays to hunt, news of various members of the family, agrees with Cary that Mr. Wilmer should have a new wife (his first wife Mary "Peach" Gilmer Wilmer died April 7, 1853) "to take the keys of his new house", the farm managers are changing houses and new ones moving in to work in the new year, hopes that Cary will have a nice Christmas but she cannot "put a gold dollar in my letter", expects a lonely Christmas with so many of her children gone, comments on Cary's poor spelling in his letters and offers him "a half dollar for a letter of two pages without a word spelt wrong in it (closely spaced)" and closes with an apology for her own letter being poorly written. |
