Scope & Content |
Letter headed "Leigh April 29th 1845, Tuesday Morning" from Mary Ann Breckinridge to her father, Cary Breckinridge, telling of their journey from Fincastle to Leigh in Albermarle County, of the things she saw and liked in Lexington, the best accommodations were at Mr. Bell's and the worst were at Mr. Tyler's Old Stand on Afton mountain (now operated by Mr. Gamble) where there we saw some rowdy looking students from the University [of Virginia]. They had been sent away from the University [for rioting?]. She names the persons she misses and the ones she has seen at Leigh, mentions the riot at the University [of Virginia]. Uncle William [Gilmer] told her to tell that "he had sold 19 hoghds of tobacco and 15-18, it averaged about 5 dollars [per hundred weight]", also mentions the wheat crop, his tobacco has been hurt by the flies, but "he intends trying brimstone, corn meal, and port to kill them. Cary's wife added a note to the letter commenting on her bad cold, which was better as she had treated herself with mustard plasters and balsam of wild cherry. She closes asking him to write often and telling of local news at Leigh. |
