Letter headed "Leigh March 18th 1845 -- Tuesday morning" from Lucy Gilmer to her to sister Emma at Grove Hill, Fincastle, Botetourt County telling of improvement in her health and looking forward to a visit from Emma in May, described the medications she has been using, of her plans to visit at Grove Hill, stopping to see other friends and family along the way, names a long list of fruits she hopes Emma will have for her, about Mrs. Anthony's son Sam passing away, closing with a request for more and more letters. Mother Mary Gilmer completes this letter with more information on Lucy's medicines, news of Ann Gilmer's illness and treatments, friends visiting Lucy, and a law suit involving the Commonwealth [of Virginia} and others over a claim for $40,000, but does not give much detail on this action and closing with comments on her own health. This letter contains treatments for several illnesses, both drug treatments and physical treatments such as cupped, blistered, and leeched. |
