Letter headed Grove Hill August 15th, 1861 from Emma W. Breckinridge to her son John who is serving in the Confederate army unit commanded by his brother Gilmer in the Camp of Instruction near Richmond, she tells of the men who have come home on furlough and some of the needs they have for clothing, food and so on, that will be sent as soon as they complete making the uniforms, of troops passing near their farm on the way to Richmond, that brother George (14 years old) wants to join the Army, tells him to carefully inspect his spelling [of words in his letter] closing with "Do not neglect to read your Bible and commit yourself to the keeping of God, may he bless and preserve you my darling boy". |
