Letter headed Camp Withers Feb 25th 1862 from John Breckinridge to his mother telling her of his winter duties, on picket last week and walked 18 miles, tracking the enemy, but they left before his company could catch up with them, John has re-enlisted for the duration of the war. Said that 29 of the men had done the same. Tell "We have hired Wilson [slave] at Manassas for forty dollars a month, he has been there for two weeks. Alec [slave] is a much better cook than Wilson." Calls on his brother George (only 15 years old) to get prepared to join the army as everyone will have to fight, hopes to get home soon on leave, they had five or six of their Calvary men taken prisoners, asks if is true that 130,000 men were surrendered at Fort Donelson? He thinks they will be pulling back to Richmond before long. Mentions that the non commissioned officers are being trained to drill the militia when they come down. |
