Scope & Content |
Letter headed "Catawba Feb 4th 1840" from Emma Breckinridge at Fincastle, Virginia to her sister, Lucy Gilmer, at Leigh, near Hardin's Tavern, Albemarle, Virginia. Emma is responding to a letter from Lucy to Emma's daughter Mary, and starts with a lecture on being more positive about her life. Mentions that Col. Burwell's barn was destroyed by fire set by an arsonist with much loss of livestock and grain. States "Poor old Nellie brought $4 and offered to her master to aid him under his losses-what would our Northern friends think of that?" Hopes to get a new carriage for her trip to Leigh in the summer, and ends with a summary of conditions with each of her children. |
