Scope & Content |
This letter headed "Grove Hill Decr. 15th 1851" from Emma Gilmer Breckinridge to her son James, in care of B. F. (Franklin) Minor, Charlottesville, Albemarle County, telling of events at Grove Hill. She mentions all the brothers and sisters and their schooling, comments on the problems that James is having at school, blaming them on the poor early education he had, about illnesses of Emma and tonsils being removed from Lucy by Emma's brother, Harmer Gilmer, mentioned a "pledge" James has taken and hopes he will abide by it. Frank Minor, married to Lucy Ann Gilmer, daughter of John Gilmer of Edgemont. Frank Minor established a classical school which he later moved to Ridgeway, where it gained a widespread reputation. |
