Letter headed Glencary dated June ?, 1875 from Emma G. W. Breckinridge to her children at home, mentions Emma W. and all the others. She begins writing in pencil complaining she has no pens or pencils and on third line she is writing with pen and ink, letter tells of much family news and concerns about the health of Annie and Mary and asks Dr. Woodville about how serious their condition is and he replies Annie need to exercise more, such as riding horseback, and Mary needs to rest more, names many of the visitors by first name only, tells of the cost of staying at the Red [Sulphur Springs] would cost $10 per month and later writes a note in pencil at the end of her letter stating the Old Sweet [Springs] will charge $7.50 per month and the Dr. Woodville recommends the old S. [rings] to John and Fanny. Letter headed Feb. 15, 1864 from Julia Breckinridge to her husband Gilmer opens by saying she wants to hear from him and then switches to a code using letters and numbers for three lines, followed by normal writing, is disappointed she has not had a reply from Ma [Emma W. G. Breckinridge], also no news from the "Prize Romance" contest in which she hoped to win $100, that Mr. McGuire may open a school for ten pupils at $100 each, Aunt Deborah in Richmond recently had breakfast with Mrs. President Davis and Alice [Watts] Robertson had joined them, Julia plans to go to Lynchburg or Richmond to have her teeth "plugged" in the spring, tells of their son John and his mischievous ways, Josephine is making envelopes to mail this letter, Nannie is learning a song; "I want to be an Angel", and was upset that she could not go to church last Sunday with her mother. |
