Letter headed "Tuesday morning" with a post mark of June 12, 1845 from Emma Gilmer Breckinridge, near Fincastle, Virginia, to her mother, Mary Gilmer, at Leigh near Hardins Tavern, Albemarle and tells of her return trip from Leigh to Grove Hill, finding all the children doing well in spite of several having whooping cough, gives details of her journey of three days, comments on the tobacco and other crops, of her attempts to get a teacher for the children for school in September, news of the Watts family at Oakland, sends news of the servants (slaves) babies born and the death of one of Nancy's twin boys who died while Emma was gone, tells of selling land to payoff a creditor, having to replace their overseer, and poor prospects for the crops. |
