Scope & Content |
Undated letter headed "Staunton Thursday evening" from Emma Breckinridge, who is travelling by carriage from Fincastle to Leigh, near Hardin's Tavern in Albemarle County, Virginia, to her husband, Cary Breckinridge at Catawba near Fincastle, Botetourt, telling him that he does not need to comedown by the seventh of this month. Emma details her trip to Staunton: spent the first night as Van Meter's, the second at Gibson's, stopping at Mr. Steele's for lunch on the way to Staunton where she is spending the third night. Date of this letter is probably early in August 1838 as she is writing her husband again on August 7, 1838 from her mother's (see Object ID1969.51.239). She also mentions that baby James [about 1 year old] has been ill, and thinks he will be better "as soon as his tooth is out" [of the gum]. |
