The letter in principle is a list of names submitted to Bernard which contains the names of soldiers that were charged for clothing and supplies. Laughton writes to Bernard that the publication of the addresses delivered to the A. P. Hill Camp of Confederate Veterans reminded him of a roll he possesses of the Petersburg Rifleman, Company E, 12th Virginia Infantry at the time he was commander of the company. He states that the wounding of several officers, and the election of another to the legislature, was the reason he was elected commandant of the company. The list he is submitting will be of interest: it is the company survivors - most of whom were citizens of Petersburg. Laughton thinks that one of the Petersburg newspapers would be willing to publish the list, for old-times-sake. Laughton does not list the dollar amounts that were due, because the "stay law" - and other factors - would prevent collection of the amounts. He then lists the names. Laughton says the partial list submitted is of one of the most gallant companies of gentlemen that he was privileged to command. He was junior in years to many of the men. He is filled with pride that he was thought worthy of the position, until he was assigned to the Battalion of Sharpshooters. He remembers the names on the list, many of whom were members of his company of sharpshooters. All were the bravest of the brave, and though many of the names may now be forgotten, they should be preserved in some manner. Certainly, by their enrollment in the record of the A. P. Hill camp. He ends by saying to Bernard that, if he thinks it worthy, he can make use of it as he deems best. |
