Letter headed "Pittsa C H Jany 5th 1842" from George Gilmer to his mother, Mary Gilmer, at Hardins Tavern, Albemarle, Virginia, explaining he has decided not to travel this winter, rather he will stay home and work. Talks of having to pay for the Negroes he has bought, and has one hired out at $96 per year. George plans to board at the Tavern again this year. He sends advice that the times are hard, and things are selling very cheap; it is not a good time to be in debt. He asks his mother to make him "3 or 4 pairs of summer drawers of a light material." |
