Letter headed Eldon April 21th 1861 to John [Breckinridge] from Beverly K. Whittle telling of the excitement of war coming from the local folks [Pittsylvania Court House], "volunteer companies are drilling day and night", soon "Old Virginia will be drenched in blood--When Greek meets Greek then comes the tug of war", Whittle wants to spill some Yankee blood, but wants to wait until he is grown (at 15 years of age he only weighs 120 pounds), thinks it is foolish for a 15 year old boy to take the place of a man, suggesting the boys will all run when they see the enemy, stating "you mountain fellows are the boys to do the work, not these little fever and ague runts that are not worth a turn of [corn] shucks", about fights he has had with his school mates, mentions having seen some of John's kinsmen, about riding the colts of his Uncle James famous racing horse "Red Eye", and sends his love the family at Grove Hill. |
