Pages 29-35 of a phamplet titled "Representative Enterprises, Manufacturing and Commercial, of the South and Southwest, exhibiting the wonderful growth of cities and towns since the war, and their unequaled resources. Local sketches of business houses in Liberty, Roanoke, and Salem", by Alpheus A. Townsend and John Cornman. Lynchburg Virginian Power Press Book and Job Print,1884. These seven pages contain advertising and descriptive material on Roanoke Red Sulphur Springs, followed by testimonials regarding the restorative powers of the sulphur water in curing hay fever, digestive disorders, consumption (tuberculosis), insomnia, and other maladies. One of the testimonials is from Jos. A. Gale, M.D., who at one point served as chief surgeon for the Norfolk & Western Railway. Another is from N.W. Littell, M.D., resident physician, which concludes as follows: "The location of the Roanoke Red Sulphur Springs, the favorable surrounding, the porous soil, the rolling surface, the elevation of over two thousand feet above sea level, the freedom of dampness and fog, the privilege the guests have of alternating between Roanoke Red Sulphur Springs and Lake Springs about a mile from Salem depot, where one has a view of the famous Roanoke Valley, access to the churches of all denominations, communication with kind, intelligent, cultured people who have not forgotten what old Virginia hospitality means, all combine to render it a most favorable and pleasant resort for either sick or well." . |
