Letter headed Grove Hill Nov 27th 1859 from Lucy Breckinridge to her brother James with news about the book club she is attending with meetings every two weeks, Eliza wrote a poem for presentation to the club about a local woman who ran off with a stage driver to get married, at the end of the journey found her flock of peacocks had followed her, of a late name alarm when the Fincastle Volunteer Company headed by Mr. Anthony called for Gilmer Breckinridge to bring his Sharpe's rifle and answer a call from Gov. Wise to send the company to Harper's Ferry to put down the John Brown rebellion, tells of the upcoming marriage of Brother Gilmer [to Julia Anthony], of an old may selling "Colton's Atlas" (at $22/copy) across the area, but had been accused of spending the night in a Negro's house, she states "We all believe him to be a good old fellow in spite of evil reports", sends her love to Uncle William [Gilmer] in Albemarle County. |
