Letter headed Julu 21st, 1863, from Julia Breckinridge to her husband Gilmer begging him to write more often as she worries so much about him, tells of Griffin bringing home an old overcoat since Gilmer has acquired a brand new one from a Yankee, Edward Jones who has a job with the government in Richmond is making $1300 per year, but wants to go into the military service, she shares a letter from Uncle William Gilmer about Albemarle County affairs, and tells of the loss of two boys from Lexington on the same day, one at Chancellorsville and the other at Vicksburg. No news from the Buchanan Compnay of men fighting at Vicksburg, and the Yankees are in Whytheville where Dr. Tom Burger's company hads been engaged in a battle there and almost the entire company was captured. She is thankful that Lee has crossed the Potomac River and escaped back to Virginia by now. She shares local happenings and complains about the high cost of everything: beef is 98 cents per pound and small children's shoes are $18 a pair and no candles or tallow are available "for live nor money" and closes asking him to not to accept the position of color bearer for his unit, as it is too dangerous. |
