R. W. Jones Letter - June 2, 1892 |
Dates of Creation |
June 2, 1892 |
Scope & Content |
R. W. Jones writes to Bernard that he has just read the "Rural Messenger" of May 28th. Reading the article "Maryland Campaign of 1862", written by Bernard, revived many memories. Jones is responding to the request, within the article, for soldiers to make corrections to any errors. In response to Bernard's statement concerning condition of the Brigade and Regiments after the 2nd Battle of Manassas - "The small detachment composing the 12th Virginia being under the command of Lt. J.R. Manson of Company I...." Jones states that he was in that battle and was the ranking officer when the fight was over. As soon as he learned that night of the wounding of Colonel Weisiger, and the death of Major May, (Lt. Col. Taylor being sick) and the absence because of wounds or sickness of the other Captains, he (Jones) endeavored to get the regiment together. The next morning he was in command and continued in command until 14 September, when both Lt. Colonel Taylor and Captain Laurllyn returned to duty. This was the same day as the battle of Crampton's Gap at South Mountain, MD. The brigade was under the command of Col. W. A. Parham of the 41st Virginia. Jones states that he writes without referring to his diary, but knows that he was in command of the 12th Virginia. Lt. Manson remained until the battle of September 14 in Maryland, where he was captured. After that battle, Jones was again in command and led what was left of the 12th in the battle of Sharpsburg, MD (Antietam). Jones says that if Bernard would write to Capt. J. R. Mason he will find that he (Jones) is correct. He also informs Bernard that he wrote to him a day or two ago on another point. |
