Scope & Content |
A photograph of the dining room at "Cocke-Spur", the Orchard Hill residence of Mr. Lucian Hayward Cocke and Sarah Johnson Hagan Cocke, his wife, during the May 4, 1914 reception for Vice President, and Mrs.Thomas R. Marshall. The May 4, 1914 issue of The World News gives the following account: "At 1 o'clock the Vice-President and Mrs. Marshall, Mrs. J.W. Kern, Hon. Harry St. George Tucker, Col. Alfred B. Williams, Miss Frances Mingea, of Abingdon and Mr. Francis Cocke were ushered into the dining room by their hosts, Mr. and Mrs. Cocke, to an elegant luncheon." "This room is beautiful with magnificent antique mahogany furnishings, resplendent with heirlooms of silver and cut glass, while on the walls graced with handsome pictures of ancestors, hangs an oil painting of Mrs. Cocke's 'old black mammy' whom she has made famous in nursery rhymes and stories." "The long, massive dining table was lovely with Mexican lace cover, having for its center piece an American flag made of candied grapes in red, white, and blue, surmounted by a "Rooster vase" filled with sweet peas in the national colors, while gracefully covering the dome light suspended over the table was the national flag from which extended small streamers of red, white, and blue ribbons." "Covers were laid for nine guests and at each plate was a dinner card with views of the lawn at "Cocke-Spur". A small "Democratic Rooster" which is also the insignia of the "Cocke" family was perched on each silver goblet." "A suggestive touch of the old time South was imparted to the scene at the table by the colonial surroundings and famous southern dishes which were served displaying the art of a southern housekeeper." "During the serving of the delicious menu animated conversation was enjoyed." The dinner card referred to in the newspaper account and placed next to each table setting is shown as an inset in the upper right corner of this photograph. The newspaper account quoted herein was provided by the Virginia Room of the Roanoke Public Library. This photograph appears on page 27 of a scrapbook titled "Cocke-Spur" formerly owned by Sarah Johnson Hagan Cocke. |
