Letter headed "Oak Lands Oct. 8th 1842" from Mary Ann Breckinridge to her mother at Catawba, hand-carried by Mr. Holcombe telling of events at her school, illnesses in the family and family visiting. A portion of this letter is by Mary Peachy Gilmer telling about how much she dislikes her teacher Miss Kate, whom she describes as "very disagreeable and always quarreling"; also that Miss Kate wants Mary to sleep with her every night, news of family travels, a dress she wants made, a pen knife and quills to make better pens for her writings and pleads for her sister to write often. |
