Delevan Bates letter of August 31, 1892 |
Dates of Creation |
August 31, 1892 |
Scope & Content |
In writing his article for Bernard, while describing the "Battle of the Crater", Bates mentioned Ransom's Brigade of North Carolina Troops. He stated that it might have been "Ramseur's". He asks Bernard to make the change if Ransom was not there but Ramseur was. He then states that if neither officer was in command of the troops that fired the volley in which he was shot, he asks Bernard to change the name to correspond to the facts. Bates believes every officer and private should have full credit for all they did. [Note: Ramseur was mortally wounded at Cedar Creek, October 19, 1864.] [Brig. Gen. Matt Whitaker Ransom commanded during the siege of Petersburg.] [Brig. Gen. Robert Ransom Jr., the younger brother of Matt Whitaker Ransom, defended the Weldon railroad and commanded the cavalry of Jubal Early.] |
