One page letter on line paper with an envelope. On the exterior of the envelope, the top left corner has a typed address, reading "Return to Office of Roanoke Land & Improvement CO., 37 S. Third Street, Philadelphia, Pa., If not called for in Ten Days." In script on the right half of the envelope, "Contract. Julius C. Holmes with R. L. and I. Co. for Cisterns 'C.' and 'E.' Houses" Numbered "18" "Copy" is written in the top left corner of the letter. A contract letter from Julius C. Holmes to Frank Maddock Eug. of The Roanoke Land and Improvement Company agreeing to build cisterns to supply houses with water. Quoted prices included. Complete transcription of the letter as follows: Roanoke, Va. March 1st. 1882. I hereby agree to build cisterns according to drawings and to satisfaction of Frank Maddock Eugs. of Roanoke Land and Improvement Co. 8 ft. diameter 8ft. 6in. deep lined with brick as shown. thoroughly plastered in cement and spouting and terracotta pipe with roofs of sixteen houses now building. Furnish and place iron pumps over all cisterns with pump trough and gutter leading therefrom complete for seventy five dollars per cistern. Price to include all work and materials necessary to insure proper supply of cistern water for use at each house. Signed Julius C. Holmes. |
