Letter headed "Grove Hill, January 11th, 1854" from Mary A. Woodville to her brother, Cary Breckinridge, Jr., at Chatham, Pittsylvania County, Virginia, teasing him about his poor spelling and praising his improved handwriting; tells news of his friends who have been home for Christmas and will be returning to school next week; of her husband Lewis who is alone at Glencary; of her Uncle John Gilmer who has sent a copy of his house plan to Grove Hill which she like, but comments: "What a pity he does not have a wife to put in it." Uncle William Gilmer is spending time with them and they enjoy his company, tells of the new overseer Mr. Anderson who started working the first of January, living in the Catawba house, and says he plans to repair "the nine or ten miles of fence" and will make the place look much better. |
