Letter headed Bath Alum [Springs], Dec. 24th 1862 from Gilmer Breckinridge to his wife Julia telling of events there, his wagon has just arrived from the west and had a [steel] tire broken coming down the mountain, the County Clerk at Warm Springs said he thinks the judgement against Lewis and Gatewood had been recorded, Gilmer plans to send the wagon home soon, about word received that the enemy is gathering at Strasburg to attack Staunton or perhaps [Gen.] Burnside is planning a new route to Richmond or maybe an attack on Bedford where he could destroy the railroad and the canal below Buchanan, that the pay master is expected soon to pay the men, remarks about Uncle Jordan,14 cakes of chocolate, and not having milk to make it with. |
