One page letter on lined paper addressed to Chas. Hacker from Frank Maddock outlining an option for sale of Mr. McClanahan's property. Complete transcription as follows: [In typed letterhead on top] "The Roanoke Land and Improvement Co./ Frank Maddock, Engineer./ Roanoke, Roanoke Co., Va., May 20th 1882" [date is in script]. Chas Hacker Esq President Dear Sir; Enclosed please find option of Mr McClanahan at $35,000- $10,000- cash. This is the best we can do but the time on balance can be made ten years instead of five I think. Mr. Terry spent some time talking with Mr. McClanahan to secure this option and he gave it after reflecting that, though the mill property might be better for him now or for his life yer this sale would be better for his estate. Mr. Terry will make no change for right of way across his land which is the only intervening property between the spring and our own. The time of option is short so the matter should be decided at once. I would recommend the purchase. Most truly + respectfully yours, Frank Maddock" There is a blue ink stamp which says that the letter was "Received May 22 1882 37 So. Third St. Philad'a." |
