Letter headed "Grove Hill Octr 1st 1858" from Emma Gilmer Breckinridge to her son, John Breckinridge, who is planning a trip home [from Pattonsburg where he is probably a student of Mr. Galt] to Grove Hill. Emma tells of the little carriage being repaired and hopes to get it repaired soon (it is in Mr. Camper's shop), gives an update on all of John's brothers and sisters, Cary has received his orders and is on the way to Memphis, Brother William Gilmer wants John and George to write him, of several of the many visitors who have at Grove Hill in recent weeks, and closes with "I have on a pr [pair] spectacles" and that is the first mention made about the use of eyeglasses in the Breckinridge letters. |
