This document, written by Bernard, contains an entry stating that the content is correct, signed by Stubbs. Bernard sent the document to Stubbs to read over, make corrections, and return. Major J. N. Stubbs was born on October 17, 1839, in Gloucester County, Virginia, at the homestead where both his father and grandfather were born. He was educated at William & Mary College. He joined the Gloucester Artillery as a private in May 1861, and subsequently was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the Confederate Army in 1862. He was sent to Texas with Gen. John Bankhead Magruder. Stubbs remained in the Trans-Mississippi Department until the close of the war. Promoted to Major he served on the staff of General Magruder. Stubbs was the truce officer who carried the last flag of truce and surrendered Galveston City, June 21, 1865. Magruder had left for Mexico and left Stubbs in charge of the surrender. At the close of the war, Stubbs attended a course of law lectures at the University of Virginia during 1865-1866. In August 1866 he began to practice law in Gloucester and adjoining counties, and continued to pursue his profession. He was selected in 1869 to be a member of the law board of the General Assembly of Virginia. He served four years in the House of Representatives and twelve years in the Senate, and continues to be a member. Major Stubbs at this time (1895) is a Second Lieutenant in command of the Grand Camp of Confederate Veterans of Virginia, and is chairman of its history committee. He is also a member of the history committee of the Organization of United Confederate Veterans of which Gen. Stephen Dill Lee, of Mississippi, is chairman. |
