Similar to Object ID 2009.75.181 biography. Born November 19, 1892. School to Charles Campbell and Thomas S. Davidson. North Carolina Military Academy, Hillsboro, for two sessions in 1858. Moved to Missouri 1859 and clerk in St. Louis at Memphis Packet Company until spring 1861. At Camp Jackson with Missouri Minute Men when they were captured by General Lyon, but escaped in the confusion and left the same night in the last boat that went South (the Fred Kermett). Joined as private in the City Guard at Norfolk in May. In June elected Junior 2nd Lieutenant, Company D, 12th regiment. May 1862 appointed Adjutant of the 12th. Wounded in first charge at 2nd Manassas. Returned to duty during Battle of Fredericksburg. Detailed as brigade inspector, December 20, and served until June1,1863. Returned and served with regiment through Gettysburg Campaign et seq.--until December 3, 1863. Commissioned Captain in Inspector General's Department, and served with Davis's Brigade, Heth's Division, through the battles from Wilderness to Weldon Railroad. In October 1864, commissioned as Adjutant General and returned to Wiesigner, formerly Mahone's brigade, surrendering with that command at Appomattox Court House. Returned to Petersburg after the War, and read law under direction of Judge Joynes till spring of 1866. Went to Norfolk, where he edited The Norfolk Virginian. Then purchased and edited The Index, and afterward edited The Richmond Whig & Enquirer. In 1876 elected Mayor, continuing as such till January 1, 1882, when he assumed the office of Governor. |
