Letter headed Grove Hill August 8th [1862 by context] to Dearest Sister [Julia Breckinridge] from Lucy telling of being very lonely as her mother has gone to visit with her oldest daughter Mary Woodville in Monroe County, that brother Cary has returned to the war and they fear for his life since John was killed a few months ago, of her concern for her mother traveling with so many deserters on the roads, but that brother George took a gun with him in the buggy they were driving, heard from Fan that she had visited with her husband James Breckinridge at Gordonsville and stayed a few days with their Uncle Harmer Gilmer, that she had carried a trunk full of clean clothes to him and they were badly needed, she has ordered the local shoe maker to make shoes for Julia's daughter Nannie. The shoe maker is so busy making shoes for the soldiers he does not know when he can make the child's shoes. This letter ends in the middle of a sentence on the second page suggesting that a page has been lost. |
