Letter headed Richmond June 1st [18]64 from Sallie Grattan to "My darling Cousin" [Lucy] telling of events and conditions in Richmond which is now under siege, Jimmy [James Breckinridge] has been visiting with them and likes his position in the Army. Sallie mentions death as an every day occurrence and states "If the war does not close this summer, there will be no one left". Tells of the recent death in battle of the brilliant young Colonel Willis who was leading Pregram's Brigade, was only 22 years old and had been sent up for promotion to Brigadier General, but turned down as being too young. She notes that today is 2 years since her brother was killed in action, more statements about death, gives family news about "Little" Grattan who has been sick, Lucy Grattan and her baby may be sent to Georgia to get out of the war in Richmond, her "Papa and his brother think that having Gen. Lee and his army in Richmond will make provisions very scarce, tells that flour is $500 per barrel and not available and then Cousin Grattan Cabell visited them and said he had a barrel of flour for them, about the school hours that are from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM and then they go to the hospitals to visit the wounded described as being wretched, talks about eating strawberries and mentions "stomach cake", going to Seabrook Receiving Hospital is where the "mortally wounded" soldiers are taken in for care, and closes with mourning not being able to visit Grove Hill again, presses Lucy to say if she really loves her. |
