Letter from "Gordee" Robertson to his mother Nannie (Muh) from San Benito, Texas where he is serving in the U. S. Army and a possible invasion threat by Mexico. He tells of having an abundance of food, and worries that Nannie will deprive herself of what she needs to send him food, tells of news from the Tulsa papers that the governor of Oklahoma had a plan to send his troops home and the legislature blocked his efforts. Gordon states he knows the representative from Oklahoma and if he had anything to do with this legislation he would work to get the man defeated. Tells of Company F of the 1st Virginia (from Roanoke) "seems doomed to a prolonged stay", also complains that he "just finished peeling some potatoes, we all take out turn at this, the most disagreeable duty in the army." He is receiving the Roanoke Times, but does not know many of the people mentioned and will try to "wring a letter from Will, but I don't think I can succeed. |
