Title |
Cocke-Spur view 15 from scrapbook |
Dates of Creation |
May 4, 1914 |
Scope & Content |
Two photographs of "Cocke-Spur", the Orchard Hill residence of Mr. Lucian Hayward Cocke and Sarah Johnson Hagan Cocke, his wife, during the May 4, 1914 reception for Vice President, and Mrs.Thomas R. Marshall. "Orchard Hill", one of Roanoke's more upscale neighborhoods, derived its name from the Terry orchard which formerly occupied this hill and served the Terry home just to the north on the knoll near the present location of the library. The area was also referred to as "Official Hill" because the early homes were built for and occupied by officials of the railroad. The homes have been largely replaced by medical facilities. The gentleman standing near the porch rail in the lower view has been identified tentatively as Dr. Hugh Henry Trout. These photographs appear on page 17 of a scrapbook titled "Cocke-Spur" formerly owned by Sarah Johnson Hagan Cocke. |
