Letter headed September 19th [a family member has written this is the first letter to Mama from Julia, and Mrs. Jean Showalter states that after Julia married Gilmer in January 1860, she always addressed her mother in law as "Ma" or "Mama". The perpetual calendar shows that Wednesday Sept. 19 occurred in 1860 and in 1859 occurred on Monday]. Letter written by Julia Mayo Anthony to Mrs. [Emma] Breckinridge. Julia writes about leaving a day later due to bad roads, and sends a song and polka named "Say to Rowena" to Eliza, sends regards to Ann Page and the Chimney Sweeps Sweet Heart. She closes: "As for the distinguished Personages Ivanhoe and Young Lochinvar [both were popular characters in novels by Sir Walter Scott], I would say your most obedient, my best love to the Captain [Cary Breckinridge] and also to the Light Infantry, (George and John), you yourself, are blended with such pleasant recollections of Grove Hill that I could not refrain from saying once more Farewell." |
