Letter headed Richmond June 21, 1862 to his wife Julia from Gilmer Breckinridge telling of his trip to Richmond where he is seeking new position in the Confederate Army, tells of many soldiers who have been wounded and killed in the recent past including a conversation with Lt. Kelly who saw brother John Breckinridge who was shot on the Richmond battlefield and died a day later in a hospital, and the death of Capt Ed Bowyer of the Fincastle Artillery who was also killed in action. He states that General Longstreet had offered a "distinction" to any soldier or officer recommended by the Colonel after a battle and that brother John had been recommended by Col. Allen after the Battle of Williamsburg. He mentions several of the family members he has visited and is living with while in Richmond, describes a wooden ship having iron clads installed at Rockets [iron works], of a portable battery of one gun located on a railroad car with iron clad protection that can be relocated by a steam engine to the river's edge and the cannon can fire at enemy ships. Tells of other persons he has talked with as he is seeking his new position, that Ed Pendleton had said he would no longer let his troops elect new officers as too many of the elected officers "were indifferent" to performing their duties. This a a very interesting letter with a lot of general information about the war. |
