Scope & Content |
This is a copied letter from the Civil War era. There is no envelope or adress in the record. It was written from Salem and was the property of Mrs. H.L. Lawson Jr. and it was copied. The first part of the Letter states that her Brother (Charles) enlisted in the military. He wanted to join one of the two companies that were leaving the University of Virginia. His sister and Father seemed very concerned that the Brother wasn't ready to go to the armed forces, however the sister seemed more understanding of the brother's decision. The niece also mentions that based on sources she has read, Charles is one of the best soldiers in his company and has support from other soldiers in his regiment. The niece also mentions other companies that left Roanoke such as the "Dixie Greys", "Roanoke Greys" (Charles is 2nd lieutentant), and the "Salem Flying Artillery". The niece mentions that it was very hard to part with the men leaving for war. The niece mentions that another company will leave the botetourt area in another week. According to the letter there was a Captain named Floyd Rock that left on a train at one' o clock. There was a farewell meeting for all the companies at a Church. In the letter, the niece mentioned that the court will give $15,000 to volunteers and their families. The rest of the letter is missing. |
