The first two pages of this three-page series are a draft of the third page. James Power Smith was born July 4, 1837, at New Athens, Ohio. His father, the Reverend Joseph Smith, was president of a college in that city. His mother, Eliza Bell. was from Winchester, Virginia. He graduated in 1856 from Jefferson College in Pennsylvania, and was also graduated from Union Theological Seminary in Prince Edward County, Virginia. In May 1861, he enlisted in the Rockbridge Artillery under the Rev. (later Gen.) William M. Pendleton. He was a captain and served as adjutant and then as a corporal until spring of 1862. [ Note extraordinary progression in rank.] At this time he was appointed by Gen. "Stonewall" Jackson as his aide-de-camp with the rank of First Lieutenant of cavalry. He was with Jackson when the general received his mortal wound at Chancellorsville. Smith then served on the staff of General Howell until the general was posted to Richmond. Until the end of the war (as a captain) he served as an assistant inspector general on the staffs of General Battle and General Wharton. At the end of the war he was with General Echols at Christiansburg, Virginia. Smith saw action as an artilleryman at the following: First Manassas, Kernstown, McDowell, Winchester, Port Republic, First Cold Harbor, Cedar Run, and Second Manassas. As a staff officer he participated at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Mine Run, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna River, Winchester, Strasburg, and Waynesboro. He was wounded twice and had leave of absence once for a week. After the war he returned to his theological studies and was ordained a minister in the Presbyterian Church. He was pastor for three and one half years at Big Lick (Roanoke), Virginia. Later he became pastor of the church at Fredericksburg, Virginia, for 23 years. For two years he was an evangelist for the Synod of Virginia and since the fall of 1892 has been one of the editors of the Central Presbyterian in Richmond. He resides in Richmond. |
