Scope & Content |
Alice Gidding is informing Bernard that she and her sister (Mrs. Blake) received the papers he sent, and they enjoyed reading them. By reading them they were reminded of their old home in Maryland, and of the time of Bernard's war-time sojourn with them. She says it was a fearful time considering the dreadful people they had to put up with. She goes on to say that Bernard has probably heard of the death of her parents. After they died the farm was sold and the family separated. She, being the only single one, does the most visiting. Alice tells Bernard that she lives in Washington with a Mrs. Weedon, but spends a lot of time with her brothers in Loudoun County, Virginia, and is now visiting with her sister (Mrs. Blake), who will be going back to Washington in the fall. Mr. Blake is an Episcopal minister and has been offered several positions in other cities, but the current congregations will not let him go. Mr. Weedon and a son are in business in Washington. Alice says that a year ago she was visiting a friend in Maryland in the old neighborhood, when Mr. Page received Bernard's letter and manuscript. Alice was sent for and listened to the reading by Mr. Page. She also walked over part of the old battlefield and the spot where Bernard was wounded (Crampton's Gap). She was a quarter mile from the Gap and a mile from Burkittsville. The month was May and she walked and talked a great deal about the war. She says she would rather talk with Bernard than write. She had made other attempts to write and thank Bernard before this effort. She hopes Bernard will forgive her for being so late in writing. Her sister has many demands, being a minister's wife, and she too begs forgiveness for not writing. She wishes she had some friends with whom to talk things over, but the folks in Washington (where she lives) are of Northern thoughts and she cannot discuss politics or the war. She says she has to wait until she gets back to Maryland. |
