Letter headed Bath Alum [Springs] Dec. 30th 1862 from Gilmer Breckinridge to his wife Julia telling of receiving Northern papers from some of the troops retreating from West Virginia, gives his thoughts on ways the war might be stopped, news of the great battle at Fredericksburg where the papers claim the losses were greater then the South had heard, proposes a boundary that would separate the Cotton States from Virginia and other border states, all the way through the Midwest to the Gulf of California, and devises a way to pay for the new territory, such as free navigation of the Mississippi River and the rights to all the fur trade. Suggests the South should not rely on foreign intervention as the United States relied on France during the Revolution and then almost got caught in a European war when France asked the Americans to help them fight their war in Europe. This seems to be a detailed plan which might have worked at this stage of the War, but does not seem to have ever been tried. Comments on the Blowing Cave located about 6 miles from Bath Alum, complains the post office may be taking their money and not delivering the letters they have paid to send, closes with a mention that Nannie might get a present next month [of a new baby]. |
