George Jefferson Hundley was born March 22, 1838. He was raised in Amelia County, Virginia by his mother's relatives, the Jeffersons, as his mother died when he was three. His ancestry on both sides was from Virginia, his father's side was English and Huguenot and his mother of English descent. He attended Fleetwood Academy in Nelson County and Hampden-Sydney College. Hundley then went to the law school of Judge Brockenbrough in Lexington, Virginia, and just had time to attain his law license before entering the military in April 1861. He first was in the infantry and after one year, went into the cavalry where he served until April 9, 1865. After the war he taught school and continued his learning of the law. After the courts re-opened, (having been closed for a few months after the war), he settled in Buckingham County. In 1869 he was nominated by the Democratic party for the state senate from a district composed of Appomattox and Buckingham Counties, but was defeated. In 1871 when Fluvanna County was added to the district, he was again nominated and was elected. During his term in the Senate, Governor Walker appointed him a Brigadier General in the Militia. At the end of his term he entered into partnership with Ex-Governor Walker and practiced law in Richmond until 1883 when he took up partnership with a prominent attorney in Dallas, Texas. He returned after two years when he found his health was failing. He came back to his home in Amelia County, where he resided. He continued to pursue his profession in Southside Virginia and Richmond. |
