Letter headed Grove Hill May 3rd 1895 from Emma W. G. Breckinridge to her daughters (in Richmond?) starting with a thank you for the lemons sent by Julia (letter 1969.51.733) giving news of their visits through the neighborhood, naming all the families they visited, told of an incident where Alice Watts and Mrs. Nininger made rude remarks about one another, each saying the other "was the ugliest woman I ever saw," offers to send clothes to Eliza as she had left most of her clothes at home when she left, the corn planting is almost done, she offers to have Alex and Jane, former slaves to raise a small crop for Julia to use, mentions that Negro men will not work for food and clothes, but some of the former slaves are getting work, tells of problems raising ducks, exchanging wood (they have plenty of wood) for cotton material, and their garden is off to good start, already getting plenty of lettuce, radishes, asparagus and closes with her plans to try to visit the grandchildren as soon as she can. |
