Cameron letter of May 1, 1892 |
Dates of Creation |
May 1, 1892 |
Scope & Content |
Cameron writes to Bernard from Tallahassee, Florida, informing Bernard that he has a feeling of being a fish-out-of-water. The people he finds to be kind, and the life to be lazy, but it would be monotonous in the long term. He is unable to find any of his notes on the Chancellorsville article, but will go to the library and reproduce entries from the "War Record", for without some historical data he could not be accurate. If he finds the books he will send his contribution during the week. He then changes the subject to a political event. At this point in time, Cameron is a Governor and Bernard is a practicing lawyer in Petersburg. Cameron remarks that a Judge Hancock has granted a writ of error. (The writ involves granting or not granting a recount of ballots in certain Townships). Cameron remarks,"that is our only hope of success". He asks Bernard to send him a rough copy of the record and petition, and Cameron will, before the May term, send to Bernard "our argument in uniting", to be presented to the Court, if admissible, after Bernard sends it. Cameron then refers to a written contract that he believes Bernard has kept. Cameron does not expect to remain in Florida much longer, even though his plans have not been settled. He will inform Bernard of any change. He goes on to state that there is no opening without a longer apprenticeship. Cameron was interested in the contribution by a John Turner about the record of the Brigade made on May 6, 1864 and the supplemental letters about the Crater. |
