Two photographs of the eastern lawn at "Cocke-Spur", the Orchard Hill residence of Mr. Lucian Hayward Cocke and Sarah (Johnson) Hagan Cocke, his wife, during the May 4, 1914 reception for Vice President and Mrs.Thomas R. Marshall. According to the May 4, 1914 issue of the "World News", the punch tables in the upper photograph were decorated with flowers and dogwood boughs. At one table, punch was served by Mrs. J. R. Schick and Mrs. T. W. Goodwin, assisted by Miss Helen Becker, Miss Rosa Rogers, and Miss Mary [Terry] Goodwin. At the other table, punch was served by Mrs. Joseph W. Coxe and Mrs. John H. Parrott assisted by Mrs. Ramsey Peyton and Miss Katharine Coxe. In the lower photograph, the reception on the eastern lawn is underway. Guests in this view have been identified as Mrs. Joseph Wentworth Coxe (Mary Kealhofer Syester) -- left background with white-gloved hand to cheek; Katharine Syester Coxe (later Mrs. Charles Blake) -- profile in middle of picture with dark hat and dark suit with ruffled collar; Belinda Spindle; Mr. Whitwell Wentworth Coxe -- on the right in light-colored jacket holding straw boater; and Mrs. Whitwell Wentworth Coxe (Emily Noyes Beebe) -- at right center of photograph facing right with plumed flowered hat. These photographs appear on page 10 of a scrapbook titled "Cocke-Spur" formerly owned by Sarah (Johnson) Hagan Cocke. |
