Letter headed Brenham, Txs [Texas] Jany 22, 1868 to Eliza Breckinridge from her cousin Jefferson Bassett telling of some of the events around Christmas time, hanging stockings, shooting fire crackers, eating big meals, compares his endless work to "the old blue horse in Guggenheim's tan yard at Fincastle" always going the same eternal round of work, and no nearer my journeys end." Tells of the arrival of a niece and cousin and mentions the "chronic complaint of Virginia Gentlemen (the Breckinridges excepted) thinking he knows more about everything than other persons. A little contact with our shrewd population will take out the self conceit as a hot iron draws out the grease spot from a piece of broadcloth." He mentions the name of a colt Sorilla as being as a good name, and discusses a photographer in Houston who makes life size pictures of people that are better than oil paintings and makes the usual remarks in closing. |
