Letter headed Charlottesville April 10th from Mary Gilmer to her daughter Emma at Grove Hill, Fincastle, Botetourt telling of the condition of her daughter Lucy who has been quite ill for several months, of going to Charlottesville to visit with Pete and Lucy Minor, of the death of Lucy's friend Mildred Dabney and the sorrow she feels for Mildred's mother who is left alone in her house, of attempts to get Lucy out for a carriage ride, but her weakness in the limbs limits her movements, of some consternation that Harmer Gilmer named his son Thomas Walker Gilmer in stead of Francis and tells of a medicine she calls huckleberry bounce. "Fill up any vessel you choose with the berrys and fill the container with French brandy. It is excellent for bowel complaints of all kinds." |
