Letter from Anna Maria (Saunders) Preston, in Abingdon, Virginia to her mother, Alice (Watts) Saunders, relating the story of an accident she and her husband, Thomas Lewis Preston, suffered in the stagecoach outside Christiansburg, while returning home from Oaklands, in Roanoke County, Virginia; she says the accident was caused by the driver's drunkenness and recklessness in trying to pass another coach; she mentions as other passengers Messrs Elliot, Blair and Moore, a man from New York and another unnamed woman; she talks of the situation at home on her arrival, especially an unusual snowstorm which has affected her gardening and fruit trees; mentions visits she has paid to Anna (Thompkins) Trigg, whose son Preston was ill, and Mrs. Lee; and sends greetings to her family. Hillsborough, Virginia is mentioned, but does not exist. The writer means Hillsville, Virginia. Transcription by English Showalter accompanies the document. |
