Letter headed Williamsburg March 24th 1859 from Eliza Breckinridge to her sister Lucy Breckinridge mentioning she had not received a reply to her last letter, about leaving for Williamsburg, tells of the various families she has visited on this trip including Uncle Wilmer's, Saunder's and Mumford's, about an illness and the quinine she has taken for it, a visit to the insane asylum and some the sights she saw, met a young lady who she thinks would be a good prospective bride for her Uncle John [Gilmer], a visit to a home on the York River where the water is three miles wide, tells of her many "hair fixings" one named "muskmellon" which she plans to give to her sister Lucy, of the upcoming plans for Miss Kate's [current Oakland's teacher] wedding, closing "with love" to a list of her "colored friends" [slaves] at home. |
