Letter headed Ivy Creek, Augt. 30th 1864 from William Gilmer to his nephew George Breckinridge replying to an earlier letter he had received from George, tells of the wounding of Cary Breckinridge by a minnie ball through his leg, shot near Berryville, Clark County, Virginia on Sunday August 19 where he was leading a regiment into a calvary fight when he was wounded and his horse killed in action. Cary left on the day before for Charlottesville and then on the "cars" for Lynchburg. From there he was going to Bonsack to be picked up by his mother and taken to Grove Hill for recuperation. Williams gives a lengthy pep talk about the honor of all the Breckinridge "boys" and how they have all turned out well and a list of things for George to do: "be temperate in all things, read your Bible every day, pray God to bless you, your family & country, read good books, you can borrow them, study tactics, improve your mind, always be obedient to your superior officers, courteous and kind to those and the men under your command". Tells that he is searching for an overseer needed at Grove Hill, mentions a an old friend: Edmund Winslow who owns a large farm near George's encampment, asks George to try to get a three day leave and visit at Ivy Creek and he will share fresh fruit and provisions for him, and that if he gets sick, to let him know immediately and "I will try to get you in at the Charlottesville Hospital, the best in the Confederacy and then you can stay here." Gilmer writes the name Capt. Geo. Wm. Breckinridge as the recipient of this letter. The original of this letter in not in our collection at this time. We have only a photocopy of the original document. |
