Letter headed September 8th [1861], from Julia Anthony Breckinridge to her husband Gilmer who is in the Confederate Army near Manassas, telling of this being her third letter to him since she has received a reply from him, her anxiety at his being on a battlefield,about their daughter who is growing rapidly and will be walking soon, family news, that "the servants [slaves] have taken up a subscription for the soldiers, some giving chickens, eggs, etc...", warns that officers should wear plain clothes on the battlefield as the Yankees are trained to shoot the officers first, "Remember this Gilmer", stating "our cause is a righteous one", local news about refugees from Yankee occupied areas, Eliza is staying with her for the winter (she hopes), Mr. Joseph Anderson is raising a new company for the war and the ladies of Amsterdam are gathering new blankets, socks etc... for these soldiers, Medical quote:"Th use of molasses occasionally in your diet is almost a sure prevention of typhoid fever", George [Breckinridge] has been staying with her and has been worried about his sweetheart Fanny [Pitzer] who has diphtheria, her worries about him fighting on the down downtrodden fields of Maryland or in the streets of Washington, she tells him he is a "faithful soldier of Christ, you may also be one to your country", tells of being glad he is fighting for his country and "if you fall, you will be covered with glory", and closes with words about their daughter and how to address letters so they will come to her more quickly. |
