Mrs. Gladys Harringer, station agent at White Top, Virginia, (and one of only four women agents on the N&W at that time) works on a quilt while waiting for the train. A coal burning pot-belly stove heats the room. White Top was distinguished by being the highest point (3,577 feet) east of the Rockies reached by a regularly scheduled passenger train. © O.
